Common causes for a hoarse voice include Inflammatiory conditions (Laryngitis)
Inflammation ( swelling of the vocal cords ) called laryngitis. Acute Laryngitis ( one of a recent onset) may be part of an upper respiratory infection. Treatment of the underlying infection with voice rest is sufficient to restore the voice.
Chronic laryngitis is common among professional voice users, with improper use of voice. Patient with Gastro Oesophageal reflux & Chronic sinusitis can develop chronic laryngitis. Smokers are prone to chronic laryngitis.
Benign conditions of the Vocal cords like Nodules, Cysts & Polyps result in a hoarse voice. Nodules (the smaller ones) generally resolve with conservative treatment like voice rest & proper use of voice. Larger nodules, Cysts & Polyps need removal by surgery.
