What is GERD ?
GERD is a common condition. There is a sphincter like mechanism at the lower end of the food pipe
(Esophagus / Oesophagus) which prevents regurgitation of gastric (stomach) contents into the food pipe. When the sphincter like mechanism fails to function properly regurgitation happens. This condition is called GERD

When the symptoms are more in the throat rather than a sensation of heartburns, the condition is called Laryngopharyngeal Reflux.
Common complaints due to GERD are:
- Heartburns
- Belching
- Constant clearing of the throat with burning sensation in the throat
- Feeling of a lump in the throat
- Mucus in the back of the throat (a condition called Postnasal drip)
- Change of voice
- Difficulty in swallowing
When the symptoms are more in the throat rather than a sensation of heartburns, the condition is called Laryngopharyngeal Reflux. Diagnosis is made by means of tests which may include Endoscopy.
Management includes Treatment with medicines & Lifestyle modification. The lifestyle changes include:
- Keeping one’s weight under control by a healthy diet & proper exercise
- Leading a stress free life
- Complete dinner early & going to sleep at least 3 hours after dinner
- Avoiding spicy food
- Avoid dairy products after dinner
- Avoid / minimise alcohol consumtion
- Quit smoking
- As far as possible sleep with ones body turned to the left side
