A sore throat is irritation accompanied by a scratchy sensation inside the throat
Common causes of
Sore throat & Throat Pain are:
Allergy
The allergy could be triggered by food allergens or Inhalant allergens. Allergy triggered by Inhalant substances are accompanied by symptoms of Allergic rhinitis
Postnasal drip
It is a symptom where there is a need to clear mucus in the throat. Postnasal drip could be due to allergy in the nose , sinus problems or more commonly due to acidity with heartburns, Patients with heartburns also experience a burning sensation In the throat.
A viral infection (Pharyngitis)
A viral pharyngitis is usually self limiting. Its treated with throat gargles & simple pain killers like paracetamol which also controls the fever.
Bacterial Infection
Commonly caused by bacteria called Streptococcus ( hence the condition is also called a Strept throat. The bacterial infection may be accompanied by a swollen tonsils, exudate (pus) in the tonsils & high temperature . Bacterial infections are treated aggressively with antibiotics along with painkillers.
